Neat product
By Rachel Beck
I have been using this product for a few weeks for a purpose not intended by the manufacturer (baby food cubes) and it is working very well. The product is small, 5 inches by 5 inches) and that size initially made me feel very upset by it. What I did not take in to account is that it does hold the same amount of ice as a normal tray, because the large plastic dividers of a normal tray are replaced by small amounts of silicone. Therefore, the footprint of this product is much smaller than a normal tray, which I would imagine most people would appreciate. The silicone lid idea was very inspired and works incredibly well. What I do not like about this product is the fill line (where you want the water or food to be before you put the lid on) is on the outside of the tray. Each divider holds about 3/4ths of an ounce and if you are using this for baby food or non water purposes you do not have to obey the fill line at all. You can put the food up to about 1/4 of an inch away from the top. I have not used this for water, but I would imagine due to expansion you would have to obey that line, but once again the line is on the outside, so good luck.
This product is a bit pricey and the shipping is through the roof (but I did receive this product very quickly from Kegworks, so I guess they did a good job) in my opinion (I guess I have been spoiled by Amazon super saver shipping). If I did not have to pay such a high amount for shipping I believe I would order more sets of these because they work so well and I love how small they are now that I understand they do hold quite a bit. If using for ice keep in mind once the lid is taken off you would need to transfer to another container because of the grid not relining up to the ice, but the ease of taking the lid off is great. If using for baby food, like me, this product works great and makes a cube that is perfect size for traveling.

great idea - just not quite there yet
By Sarah Rutigliano
These are so cute - and seemed to solve so many of the problems with other ice-cube trays - the annoying trying to get water into each little cube, the too flexible nature of a silicone ice cube tray (leading to water all over the floor when your putting them in the freezer) - and these buzbox ice cube trays DO fix those problems. HOWEVER, getting the ice out of them is a total pain in the butt. You have to run hot water over the plastic box part to separate the silicone portion from the plastic box. If this were the only problem I would probably still give this item 5 stars - because, let's face it, they are super cute and they DO fix the annoying problems I mentioned above. The BIG problem with these ice cube trays is that the silicone is not flexible enough and getting the ice cubes out of the middle of the grid is torturous. My roommate won't even attempt it anymore - she says it really hurts. I'm a little tougher in the fingers, so I can get them out - but these boxes stay in the freezer until we are totally out of ice - definitely would not buy more of them.

I LOVE these ice cube trays!

I LOVE these ice cube trays!!!! I HATE uncovered, long rectangular ice cube trays, because the smells and tastes of other foods in the freezer get into the uncovered ones (let alone whatever bacteria and materials are on the surfaces of bags, shelves, other trays, etc - yuck! - You'll say I'm fastidious until YOU stare at some unidentified spot of material in your ice cube and wonder JUST what it is - ). The rectangular ones also don't fit well if you want to segregate/arrange food for any reason (or if you have a ridge-bottomed freezer like we do).
These I LOVE because they have a more compact footprint, (we can) stack four on top of each other from bottom to middle shelf of the freezer, the ice cubes are not the enormous half moon-shaped behemoths that take up most of your short glasses (and your mouth), they don't spill from sink to freezer (unlike ALL of the uncovered ones), and you don't have to have biceps or fingers of steel to get them out (unlike all traditional twist types, or other pop-out styles I've tried).
My way of using them: I fill the water to the fill line pretty exactly ('cause any more and the lid will be harder to separate from the bottom - although it won't be HARD, it will just make you take annoying extra time separating and prying), and wipe the whole thing dry (so that the lid has no problems popping off when it comes out again). When the ice is ready, I pull up on the lid edge to release the edges going all the way around (kind of like you do with a sealed paint can). I then push my thumbs into every square to free each cube, shake it a bit, squeeze the sides of the tray bottom to release any more ice (if possible, the bottom is kinda hard - I might just be doing this for good measure), then flip the whole thing over in my hand. Then I shimmy the BOTTOM OFF THE TOP. The lid then, will be in my hand, grid up, like the picture in the product description, and the ice cubes will be ready to be picked out, in the grid, one by one (and easily, too). You could just as easily dump them into a container/dish/punch bowl all at once, as well - just flip the lid over a container and pop each cube out - I just don't like the extra step and the extra stuff I have to buy/have in my freezer, so I don't do it that way. Instead of dumping the remaining unused ice into another container, then, I simply make sure each ice cube that is left is relatively in its place, and then shimmy the bottom down on the top again. I bump, shove, and push any errant ice back in towards the center along the way (doing whatever works to get them in alignment again), and then flip it back upright. Finally, I thumb around the edge of the lid and push it down a bit in the middle, to make sure the lid is as far down as it can go, and then put it back in the freezer. *By the way, once the ice cubes are frozen, the seal of the lid is good enough that you can put the ice cube tray on it's side and nothing will open or fall out.*
It all might sound like a bit much, but it's really mostly no/brainer intuitive stuff that I'm certain you'll do automatically - I just described it as clearly as I could in case anyone tried it out and encountered any of the same details I did (like finding the ice sliding out a bit as I worked the bottom back on the top), in case my comments/descriptions might help.
So like I said, I LOVE these ice cube trays. They beat the pants off of other ones I've tried for looks, effectiveness, and usability. If you're picky about food odor, where you can arrange them in your freezer, and want as little hassle as possible in terms of other pieces you have to have (a dump tray, for instance), not to mention having an easy time getting the ice cubes out, these can't be beat.
