2Excellent fried food, cheap materials
By Melissa Almeida
I have received my Actifry this week. The potatoes I fried here came out perfectly fried. Imagine the best french fries you have tasted but without the greasy feeling and oil dripping from them. The oil you will find on the fries once they are ready is virtually invisible. If you want them very crispy, just let them fry a little longer than the specified time. If you like them tender on the inside, follow the specified time provided on the user's manual which is around 40 minutes for 2 1/5 pounds.

So far I have tried frying potatoes, bananas, nuggets and onions. All came out with brilliant results and what's best, using minimal oil. They all looked and tasted just like fried but were not greasy. And they were very crispy.

The only drawback is the quality of this gadget that was clearly not made to last. I have used mine 6 times only and the paddle has already stopped working twice for no apparent reason. The paddle was attached correctly and no food was blocking it from turning around. I had to turn off the unit several times before the paddle resumed working on both occasions. So I guess this will not last much since it has been used only a few times.

The Actifry has been around on Europe for some years now and I have found several people complaining about the product quality. It is not unusual to find reviews of people having it exchanged or fixed twice during the one year warranty time.

I would expect something so expensive to last a lot longer. If someone else finds the same issue with the paddle please comment.

UPDATE (01/08/2010):

I recommend checking Amazon's website in UK if you are interested in more reviews of this appliance. There you will find 240 reviews of Actifry.

My Actifry is being used around 5 times/week and sometimes the paddle still stops turning, but I find that removing and inserting it back usually solves the problem in no time. I am still very satisfied with the food it produces, but really wish that Tefal would improve the durability of this item.

UPDATE (02/02/2010 - One star removed from the 3-stars-rating, now only 2 stars):

I would like to point some flaws I have found on the unit until now. There really is a lot of room for improvement by Tefal:

1. The paddle sometimes stops turning for no reason at all, as I have already described above;

2. The piece that attaches the panhandle to the pan consists of two screws and a small piece of plastic that goes all the way down the side of the pan. More than a HUNDRED times I had to run to the machine because I could hear the paddle had got stuck and could not turn. ALL THESE TIMES the reason was that the food had got stuck due to this little piece of plastic and the paddle could not turn anymore because it was blocked by the food. Would it have been so difficult to attach the handle without this small piece of plastic? I truly doubt it;

3. The paddle would be so much easier to clean if it was not hollow on the bottom. Lots of food pieces enter the several small holes which seem to be there just to make it awkward to clean;

4. The plastic lid cover gets cracked by the heat the machine delivers! I have never removed this cover to clean, so it can't have been dropped or badly handled during clean ups. However, a crack has appeared at the front of the plastic lid cover. All I can think of is that heat from the machine during its normal operation cycle has made it crack.

In my opinion, the downsides of this machine outweigh the great results it delivers. That is really a pity since this machine could have been much better designed and the use of higher quality materials shouldn't add much to such a steep price.

UPDATE - 04/09/2010

This week, the paddle has finally stopped turning for good. And the plastic lid cover seems to crack a little bit more each time I use it. Luckily it is still in the warranty period since I bought it 6 months ago. So that was the lifetime of my Actifry - 6 months.

4Not perfect, but great
By Nip-Tuck-Fan
I bought this in 2008 in Germany and use it every day for perfect fries and everything else pre-cooked or pre-fried. First of all: it is important to understand that it's more like an oven than a frier. Never made home-made fries, frozen works for me. In less than 20 mins I get my side order. If you cook more, like 2 pounds, you will need more time.
I have never had a serious issue with the machine. I broke the lid while cleaning it (it is NOT dish-washer safe as I learned) and Tefal sent me a new one next day for free (I am happy we have 2-year-warranties in Europe, it's the law here). I also bake frozen rolls, spring rolls, fish sticks, breaded shrimp, chroissants, even small pizza slices etc. etc. Maybe it is not good to share this, but sometimes I just take the rotating arm out (for bigger items) and use it without - which is against instructions but works great.
What bothers me is that the 'timer' does not switch the machine off and its' signal is drowned in the overall noise of the machine. If you don't wait next to it, you won't even notice the alarm. Maybe this has been improved though by now.
Bottom line: It is absolutely overpriced considering the quality of this 'pot'. But it is not if you consider the benefit of healthier fries. And they do taste much better than from the oven. If you eat a lot of pre-fried food and want a healthier, easier way to cook them, this is the one for you. It might also save some energy compared to heating the 'big oven' just for a few fries.

1T-FAL ACTIFRY 2.2 Pound Low Fat Multi-Cooker & Healthy Fryer:
By Man In The Arena
Aloha!
Actifry has been sold in Europe for two years now with seriously
mixed results. Amazon.co.uk has had to refund customer's money
numerous times as the Actifry has a consistently dangerous tendency
to 'catch fire' amongst other issues, i.e.; broken paddles, broken lids,
Not dish-washer safe, teflon coating 'wearing off', timer too low to be heard
[Note: Acitfry Does not Switch Off Post Timer-Alert] Controversially the reviews
continue to be mixed. However and in consideration of the consumer price of Actifry, it
alarms most folks that the ongoing problems with this unit did not show up
in the preliminary safety tests. Pre-purchase of this fryer, my suggestion would be that
customers go to the BBC report & review the ongoing safety/failure issues concerning
Actifry. Link: T-fal FZ7000002 Actifry 2.2-Pound Low Fat Multi-Cooker and Healthy Fryer.

BEWARE this dangerous product-really deserves zero stars, 6 May 2011
By Sarah "jeerahaldi" (UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
This actifry was good until it went up in acrid black smoke and sparks. We found lots of comments on the internet subsequently from others who had experienced exactly the same problem. We are very particular about fire alarms in our home so fortunately it was just the actifry that was destroyed. I hate to think what could have happened. We had no customer service from Tefal- no, let me reframe that, Tefal were rude and dismissive. We have warned all our family and friends because we consider that it really is a very dangerous product- please don't be tempted to buy this.

This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
My second actifry just blew tonight! the fan started making a noise then failed..the element then burnt out filling the kitchen with acrid black smoke. This is the 2nd time this has happened and should NOT on a machine that is just over a year old and not heavily used. It was great when it worked but the buid quality and reliablity is shocking. Feel free to buy one but dont expect it to last more than a year or so! I would NOT recommend this machine - look on the internet for people who have exactly the same problems.

Fire hazard, 10 April 2011
By Joe (UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
Had this item for 16 months from initial purchase. Was using it carefully & keeping it spotless. on about only the 20th time of use last week it let out a loud bang & started smoking! I could see flames at the back of the unit too, as I was running outside with it.

Be very aware Tefal do not admit there is a fault & all Actifrys are still the same!! Check out the Which report which was on TV in 2008. Even their test unit went on fire too just in the same manner as mine.

Tefal didn't want to hear my concerns at all & simply stated it is out of guarantee. However I am trying to use my consumer rights to return this item to the shop as it has in inherent fault & is within 6 years of purchase date.

In summary- a very good idea but very very flawed! There is a great risk of fire with this product & I am only thankful I was in my kitchen at the time. Needless to say I really will never ever buy another Tefal product again!

Check out the Delonghi F28311 Rotofryer, uses 50% oil of normal fryers, cooks 5 times faster than actifry too for a third of the price! The delonghi is A great piece of Kit & I would strongly recommend steering well clear of an actifry unless you have fire resistant counter tops & deep pockets!

too many problems, 5 April 2011
By Jane (UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
It seems a great idea - frying without oil and I can't fault how chips taste when cooked. However last year we had a three month wait for a new paddle which had snapped and it has now gone 'pop' and died. At barely 2 years old I can't say I'm impressed. I'm now going to replace it with its rival Philips air fryer and see if that is any better.

Fizz, crackle and bang goes number three., 27 Mar 2011
By S. Finlay "sgscf" (REAL NAME) (UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
Number three lasted two years and we had become quite attached to the little thing. Potato wedges, chicken strips and many other healthy options had whizzed around in it, watched in awe and wonder by family and friends through the pimped, smoked plastic lid. Number one had been with us barely two months when its power button, rather underwhelmingly I thought, failed. This was replaced under warranty by number two. Ah, number two. Eight months in we were treated to the full Actifry death or glory experience. A huge bang followed by spluttering flames and multicoloured smoke that would have given Stephen Hawking an even greater insight into the beginnings of the universe. A week without the Actifry was enough cold turkey for us. Number three, again under warranty, did not disappoint and last night it exploded. This time, just for variety, the crackling and smoke preceded the big bang (sorry, Stephen). Five stars for entertainment value alone. We are now awaiting number four.
Here comes the technical stuff:
The fan motor fails at an indeterminate point and the heating element overheats, the replacement fan motor costs £80 but only if you brave the smoke and flames to turn it off at the socket before the heating element burns out.
"The flame that burns twice as brightly, burns half as long and you have burned so very brightly" Farewell, Number three, we miss you.

I've now had two of these that have burned themselves out after a year. [They are only guranteed for a year, and mine was 4 days over!].
The first time I thought I was unlucky, so tried another one, but the fault is with the build. They work fantastically and I love everything they cook, but at the price you pay for them, they should be more robust. Sadly, I will have to go without - can't keep on buying them.

The Tefal actifry,Great concept, ideal for single person use but product quality leaves a lot to be desired, In the 13 months I have had this product I have two broken see thro lids, the paddle stopped rotating, the paddle broke and now the hot air system gave up on me. All in all considering the high cost of this product I am deeply disappointed.

Flawed Brilliance, 8 Feb 2011
By Mr. PR Cockell (REAL NAME) (UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
I have owned one of these since April 2009. It does cook very good chips but I am not expecting it to last. Sometimes one of the elements gets very, very red and I think a fire must happen soon. I watch it like a hawk.

Another problem is the paddle. Mine broke just after the end of the guarantee period. It cost £22 for a new one and a complete month to arrive (which is a joke.) The new paddle tried to break itself after about a week but I managed to turn the machine off in time to stop it happening. I am, however, expecting it to happen again at some stage. The problem is a basic design flaw - the gap between the end of the paddle and the bowl is about the same as the recommended chip thickness. What happens is that raw, still hard, chips get wedged between the end of the paddle and the bowl and the machine is too stupid to stop. It just keeps trying to push the paddle round until it breaks.

The other unacceptable aspect of the Actifry is the timer. It is very quiet and it doesn't actually turn the machine off. Incomprehensible!

When my Actifry finally destroys itself I will probably replace it with a Philips Airfryer.

tefal actifry, 27 Jan 2011

This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
Bought this item 18 months ago, used probably twice a month to cook oven chips. lids been faulty for a while and motor seemed to be struggling to rotate, then out of the blue the appliance set fire. luckily my daughter was in the kitchen and managed to unplug the fryer put out the flames and take it outside. contacted Tefal who said that the appliance was produced so that should it burst into flames you could easily blow it out and that the fire was probably cause by oil getting into the motor and would not cause much, if any, damage. Tefal offered to repair the fryer at a price but I said why did it need to be repaired if it, as they stated, wasn't broken. the other alternative was a replacement at a "special offer" price. Tefal would not accept any responsibility for the default in this product, but if you want any info on refunds or your rights go to the consumer direct web page and check your rights under the sale of goods act.

This is a great product until it reaches just over one year then - BEWARE it is likely to catch fire (mine did and so have lots of others if the reviews are anything to go by) so DO NOT leave it unattended. If you do chance it be sure to keep your reciept - Tefal were very dismissive of my complaint and of course I did not have my reciept to prove how long I had had it!

I loved the Actifry at first. Does not use much fat very healthy way of cooking easy to use. But after having this product for only 3 months it started to over heat. The fan on the Actifry packed up and now to dangerous to use and it is a lot of money to spend when you have only had the item for 3 months. could not take it back as i didnt have the receipt or the box. In some cases this has started fires as the fan has stopped working. Shame really as i did like the product at first.

Wait till your guarantee runs out., 27 Dec 2010
By lucylettuce (UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
I was a huge fan of this when I bought mine, though I thought the build quality was poor for such an expensive item, but I loved the results. The lid started to flip up during the cooking time, after about 14 months. A replacement lid was about £45, but I thought the problem was with the body of the unit. Tefal didn't want to know. I tried to hold the lid down with weights, but it just didn't work. In the end I threw it out, less than 18 months after purchase. My sister bought one at the same time as me, but hers caught on fire, after 15 months.
I wouldn't purchase again, because of the poor build quality. It's too pricey for poor reliability.

Tefal Actify KAPUT, 10 Nov 2010
By Branton
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
My second actifry (the lid on the first broke within 3 months) is now just over 2 years old but in that time it has only been used about 50 times.

I was generally fairly happy with it during its brief life but now, having only got such limited use out of it, my opinion has changed.

I turned it on yesterday to do some chips (a rare treat), turned on my kitchen timer and left the room. Less than five minutes later I heard a bang and when I investigated found my actifry had stopped working and had smoke smelling of burnt electrics/plastic coming out the back.

I unplugged it promptly, and perhaps just as well, as when I tested the fuse it hadn't blown!

Tefal Actifry blew up in my face, 6 Nov 2010
By Miss Angela Millward (REAL NAME) (UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
I have been using the tefal actify for 18 months and loved it, that was until it blew up in my face. I turned it on as usual and it made a strange grating sound, so I turned it off and checked the paddle was fitted correctly. As I pressed the power button to turn it on again, it went with all almighty bang and blue sparks shot up my hand. I was very glad to be wearing rubber soles on my feet. It frightened the life out of me, but I put it down to bad luck and was all set to buy a replacement. However after reading reviews, I have discovered this is a common problem and some units are bursting into flames. Having checked out the report on Watchdog and the poor response form Tefal, I will never buy another one, or anything else by Tefal. I will be replacing it with the Philips air-fryer.

This is a fantastic pan for cooking chips, roasted potatoes, meat, chicken and stir fries etc. I did read the reviews stating that they were guilty of going on fire but hey , this doesn't happen to me. Not until last night, that is. I was in the house by myself, doing some sausages in the Actifry when sparks and smoke started coming out of the back of the pan. I disconnected it from the mains, but still the smoke kept coming, so I put a wet towel over it ( thought this was ok as I had pulled out the plug) it did stop the smoke. Like one of the other reviews, my pan was about 18 months old. I would love another, but unless Tefal can give me a guarantee that this would not happen again, sorry, it's back to the old fryer.

This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
I've had the Actifry for 16 Months, I worked great until last Night, I was cooking chips in it when I heard a loud BANG followed by a grinding noise I went into the kitchen to find white smoke billowing out of the motor section.

Luckily I had purchased it from Lakeland who has a life time warranty on certain items & this was one & they issued a full refund :-)
Tefal only have a 1 year warranty.

I called Tefal to inform them of the defect & got a explanation that it can't catch fire due to the device been made of non flammable material,
but for me where there is smoke fire follows!!!!

Ps Lakeland don't sell the product anymore, I wonder why!!!

This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
I had one of these for about 18 months, it was really great for chips, wedges, vegtables and all that the manufacturers suggested. Unfortunately I could smell burning one day and it started to spark from the rear section. It was quickly turned off and an electrical burning smell was evident.
I got a friend to look into the problem to discover that the plastic fan unit had melted and caused the whole thing to short out.
Being out of guarantee I had no hope of getting it changed.
I was re-looking today to see if the model had been changed to second generation, having also noticed a similar review to mine, but theirs caught fire! Perhaps I was lucky.
I would buy another if this problem is sorted out by the manufacturer, as it was a great item for low fat cooking, with fantastic results."

Fantastic - until the fire, 14 Aug 2010
By A.M Cheshire ) REAL NAME) (Telford, UK)
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
I really liked the idea of the product and after my husband had a heart attack we decided to buy one so we could have healthy chips. We made a number of different types of meals in it until we dropped the paddle on the floor and it broke. It took ages to get a replacement and it wasn't cheap.

Then, about a month ago my husband put some chips onto cook and then popped out of the kitchen for 5 minutes. When he returned, flames were coming from the machine. Luckily the only damage was to the actifry itself but if he had been out of the kitchen any longer there could have been serious damage.

Having read some of the other reviews, we are not the only people to have experienced this problem and I would advise steering clear until Tefal can confirm they have implemented a safety cut-out - we think the fire was due to the fan stopping working so the element overheated. A really great concept but I will go without chips from now on.

tefal actifry "fried", 11 Aug 2010
By Doug
This review is from: Tefal ActiFry FZ700015 Low Fat Electric Fryer, 1 kg Capacity, White (Kitchen & Home)
I purchased this item from Amazon in March 2009. My Tefal Actifry has given up the ghost after only 40 useages (approx). This equates to about 20 hours continuous use and to fail after so little useage is totally unacceptable. This fryer is clearly not fit for the purpose it was intended. The motor just stopped working and thankfully I was present to switch off the power. I hate to think what could have happened if the actifry was unattended at the time of failure. Food was fine when working but there are clearly safety and reliability issues surrounding this equipment. I would definitely not take the risk of purchasing another. In any case, at this failure rate it is much cheaper to go to the local chip shop. I accept that my actifry is now out of guarantee and I guess it is a case of buyer beware. Very disappointed.
