Excellent Z-Wave Thermostat, No Subscription Needed! Do some research...

This thermostat works just as expected. The Schlage "Link" network is actually a Z-Wave network which means there are a number of home control gateways that work with this thermostat (you dont HAVE to subscribe to the schlage link service). In fact, even the Schlage Link locks work with some Z-wave home control gateways because they are Z-Wave compatible as well! I use this thermostat with the Micasaverde Vera home z-wave gateway and both my Schlage Lock and Trane Thermostat work excellent! And... no subscription fees! You can pair this thermostat with any number of zwave compatible devices and have them all work together flawlessly (motion sensors, light switches, appliance switches, temperature sensors, electricity monitors... the list goes on and on). I would highly recommend this thermostat and the z-wave network in general, I have upwards of 50 devices in my home working together to make "the connected home" a reality. I am also using a z-wave compatible i-phone app to control this thermostat and my other devices from the internet. Going to be home in an hour and need the A/C on? ... No problem ... Want to check the front door camera to see who just rang your doorbell? ... No problem ... This is just one of the devices that make these scenarios possible... and you don't need to pay a "subscription" to do it! Do some homework before you buy... look for z-wave compatible home gateways and devices.

Secret hiddden features!

This is a thermostat that does not ship with manuals... so get both the install guide and user guide from the web site. The user guide has a slew of unadvertised features.

This thermostat has a hidden service menu that you'll see referenced in the user guide. You can configure the exact type of HVAC and every other timing type feature you can imagine... truly very advanced and highly configurable.

Most people buy this as a z-wave thermostat (as I did too) expecting that the schedule for heating and cooling will be set by the separate z wave controller (like a Vera)...

What really adds to the service menu is that you can enable the built in scheduler! In my mind, this is an advantage and should be enabled by default. What's nice is that you can then maintain the traditional method for setting the heat/cool schedule. This way you are not dependent on a z wave controller and only use one for things like turning the heat on from your mobile phone an hour before you get home. If you decide to move houses, you can leave the thermostat behind without your z wave controller, knowing it will be fully functional for the next owners.

Another nice feature of this thermostat is the Usage Graph, that shows a 7 day revolving schedule of number of hours of heating and cooling. Kind of gives you a feel for your energy usage by seeing how many hours a day your heat or cool cycles have been running.

In summary this thermostat is every one of the 150 dollars that it sells for. Definitely better than the less expensive z wave thermostat by Wayne Dalton.

Great thermostat, Link features are fantastic

I recently bought my first house and have been building a Link network one part at a time. I just replaced the 20 year old thermostat with this marvelous piece of high-technology. Installation was very easy. A screwdriver & drill were all I needed. The instructions are very detailed and accurate. You must read the instructions carefully though as this is going on a dangerous appliance. Once installed I easily added the thermostat to my Link network. I then went online and configured the unit. All configuration is done using a simple point & click web interface. Setting up different schedules was simple. I also use the Link iPhone app and the thermostat shows up there as well. You can control and configure the unit right from your phone! Pretty awesome to be in bed and turn up the heat without getting out from under the covers! It also sends text alerts if anyone in the house tries to change the settings from the front panel of the thermostat as well as sending text reminders to change the filter and several other configurable alarms. This is how good technology should work!
