Keytop vs. Magnum

I couldn't decide between the Unicorn Keytop and the Unicorn Magnum, so I bought one of each. After a week of testing, here's my verdict: I prefer the Keytop. Its smaller gear teeth are capable of a finer grind than the Magnum, important for delicate dishes and when you want the pepper to be tasted but not seen. The Magnum does have several advantages. Its grinding mechanism is larger than that of the Keytop and produces more pepper per rotation, but even so, the Keytop produces plenty of pepper with little effort. The Magnum may also prove to be more durable than the Keytop. It's heavier and features a metal screw for adjusting the grind vs. the Keytop's plastic screw. And I wish the Keytop came with the Magnum's useful little dust collection tray. But if you're looking for a peppermill capable of a very find grind (as well as coarse and everything in between), I'd recommend the Keytop. They are both top notch, though, so I'm giving 5 stars to each. Ergonomically, both models are easy to fill, grab, and use. By the way.... If you call the company, they'll send you a pepper-dust collection tray for your Keytop for a few extra bucks.

Check the Price!

As everyone says, this mill is the best. But it's now $32 on Amazon for some reason, with $8 shipping (through some other company). So that's $40.

But wait! It's $22 and $4 shipping at the manufacture's site, Tom David, Inc.

expensive but nice

This is not a frugal purchase. I have to say I was 'suaded by the fact that no tv cooks EVER use ground pepper. They always use the peppermill. I have used the disposable mills that are not refillable when you purchase pepper before this purchase. I had read several internet opinions recommending the magnum (apparently mills can be persnickety to operate) and I got this version for its looks. It turns out to be cuter because the peppercorns or fennel seeds are poured into the hole on the side - where the squirrel Sherlock would be in the tree in the Magic Garden. This product is something that every one would enjoy so it is a pity that $22 would seem to be too expensive to many people like myself. I got it because I wanted to use fennel on a regular basis and wanted a designated grinder for it. The regular magnum which is the popular version comes with a tray to catch the dust and this keytop does not; perhaps that is the reason for the $10 price difference.
